What an MCP memory server does
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI apps call outside tools. A memory server is an MCP server whose tools store and retrieve information, so an AI can remember things between chats and, when several AIs connect to the same server, share them.
Many memory servers are local programs you install and run yourself, which suits one coding tool on one computer. Chat apps like ChatGPT and Claude run in the cloud, though, so they need a server they can reach over the internet.
What Relay gives you
- Hosted. Nothing to install, run or keep online. Each tool connects to your own link at
mcp.relaymemory.app. - Works with chat apps and coding tools alike: ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, Codex, Gemini CLI and more.
- Built for handoffs. Saved work is a thread: a brief, then progress, review and plan updates from any AI, with a status (planning, building, review, done) and who it's waiting on.
- Facts about you and your projects, shared with every AI, marked unconfirmed until you approve them.
- Smart search by meaning as well as keywords.
- A dashboard to read, edit, organise and export everything, and to see which AI did what.
The tools your AI gets
Once connected, an AI sees a small set of memory tools and uses them when your work calls for it:
- Read: list projects, list and search conversations, load a conversation's brief and updates, and recall remembered facts.
- Write: save a conversation, add an update, set its status, move it to a project, and remember a fact.
- Delete (off by default): only items that AI saved itself, only after asking you.
That's the whole surface: Relay's tools don't run code, read your files or browse the web.
Built to be safe to share between AIs
- One key per AI, each read-only or read-write, optionally limited to certain projects, and revocable at any time.
- Passwords, API keys and tokens are removed before anything is saved.
- Saved text is marked as data, not instructions, and text that looks like it's trying to instruct an AI is flagged for you.
- Every action is in your audit log; deleted items wait 30 days in the Trash.
Connect your first tool
For a tool on your computer, it's one command. For example, Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user relay https://mcp.relaymemory.app/mcp/YOUR-KEY
For chat apps, paste your link into their connector settings. Every tool has a step-by-step page: start with ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor, or see all tools.
