Why running out of messages hurts
Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and the coding tools all cap how many messages you can send in a few hours, especially on free and lower plans. The limit usually arrives at the worst moment: deep in a task, with a long conversation full of decisions the AI now knows and you'd have to explain again.
You can wait for the limit to reset, or open another AI and start over. Starting over means pasting a summary (if you managed to get one before the cut-off) and explaining the goal, the decisions and what's left, again.
The fix: keep the work outside any one AI
If the state of your work lives in a memory that every AI can read, it doesn't matter which AI runs out. That's what Relay is: one private memory, shared by ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini and 20+ other tools over MCP. As you work, your AIs save the plan, progress updates and decisions to it. When one hits its limit, another loads that and carries on.
How it works in practice
- Connect two or more AIs to Relay (each gets its own link; setup guides).
- Turn on saving as you go. Right after connecting each AI, send it this once, and choose "Allow always" when it asks:
In every conversation, store our work in Relay: save new plans, add progress updates as we go, and keep it up to date.
- Work as usual. Your AI saves a handoff brief (goal, decisions, open questions, next steps) and adds progress updates along the way.
- When you hit a limit, open another connected AI and say:
Continue my latest work from Relay.
It loads the brief and the latest updates, tells you where things stand, and continues. When the first AI's limit resets, it can pick up the other AI's progress the same way.
When the other AI can't connect
Some AI apps don't allow custom connectors on their free plan (ChatGPT's free plan, for example), and some don't support them at all. Others do: Claude Free, Le Chat, GitHub Copilot Free, Codex with a ChatGPT Free login and more (see which free plans work). Either way, you can still move your work:
- Open the conversation in your Relay dashboard and click Copy for another AI. It copies the brief, the latest updates and your preferences as one message.
- Paste it into the other AI. It's written so the AI tells you where things stand and carries on.
- When you're done, ask it for a progress update, then click Paste its reply back in the dashboard, so your connected AIs see it too.
What carries over, and what doesn't
- Carries over: the plan, every saved progress update and review, decisions, open questions, the status, and the preferences and facts you've asked AIs to remember.
- Doesn't carry over automatically: the exact chat word for word, or anything said after the last save. An AI that's out of messages can't save anymore, which is why saving as you go matters.
- Relay doesn't raise any AI's limits or share accounts. It moves your work, so you can use the AIs you already have access to.
